For my first several hours in-game, it was extremely frustrating. I was trying to make it work the way I thought it should work (since there really isn't a great deal of guidance), and...it wasn't working. Beyond problems on the heist, I had no grasp of the shop system for a bit, so my first few attempts were a tale of money problems and dead or imprisoned thieves. And then something clicked. And oh man have I been obsessed with this game since. And I'm still within the first 20-25% of the story! Some pros: It's a legitimately thrilling, rewarding experience to make that narrow escape with all the loot. A+ on capturing "the feel of the heist." If you've ever wanted to have your own adventure in Lankhmar, this is the closest you'll get at the moment. The art and atmosphere make me feel like Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser could pop up any minute. Suitable price for the content, in my opinion. Great price when you consider how niche the subject is. That je ne sais quoi certain games (XCOM series and the like) offer whereby the player develops complicated relationships with the in-game crew. U/I and functionality: it looks pretty, it works, and it hasn't been as buggy for me as some of these reviews would indicate. Music is pretty perfect. Some cons: I've come into contact with one very minor bug so far where a story-quest resolved without me being able to see the result. Pretty minor. There are certainly some areas of gameplay which could be tweaked or expanded. Sadly, that doesn't look likely to happen. And that's a damn shame. Probably the worst thing is how opaque certain gameplay elements are until trial-and-error teach the player how a skill or mechanic works. (The "climb" skill is still basically a guaranteed death-sentence whenever I try to use it.)Okay. That's about it. Buy it! Enjoy!. Love the vision of Alex Thomas and team but being just under 2 hour mark I'm still not sure if I'm enjoying it.It'll take you around 20-30 mins to get the hang of the core mechanics which I enjoyed working out for myself. However, it will be at points deeply frustrating (and defo some ai bugs). Although I'm starting to get past a learning curve I'm not sure I'm finding depth behind it but a clunkiness not that forgiveable in modern game design. That said even though I'm tempted to return as under the 2hour mark feel like this is an earnest attempt at something interesting and may reward my patience (and money) in time. Fingers crossed. Some suggestions, some may be obvious, that helped.- Don't buy too many characters, your gold debt stacks up pretty fast- Go for the small wins (don't try to rob every house straight off the bat)- On the map you can and should send multiple thieves off to do lots of different things: pub for morale - random missions for group xp, a few off to pilfer some for much needed xp, focused much more on the xp than the gold at first sometimes sticking to just the first or second floors of houses. Eavesdrop if you have the patience lets you loot the first floors with relative ease.-Stockpile characters experience points until you can start getting new major abilities at 5 points (after leveling up about twice). - Pawn specific stolen loot at the relevant fence to turn your booty into gold but watch out for the fences upkeep cost. Gold debt fun. May be obvious but once i had those things top of mind started feeling the thieving and da killin a bit.. The pros:1. I like the visuals.2. Great concept. Love the premise. Need more games like this.3. I like the actual level designs; although they smack of basicness. The cons:1. The controls are garbage in the most impressive way. Who the hell uses the arrow keys in any game, ever? To make matters worse, there's no keybinding option. This is 2017--if you have hotkeys in your game, you build a keybind option in the menu. But really, dev(s), WASD. Learn it. Also, spacebar is always pause. Not P.2. Combat is atrocious. Being locked into battle is simply weird and kind of anti-fun. Secondly, if you're going to have a combat specialist as an option in the game, they should be a badass when they're level 100 in everything and have all the combat skills. RNG is one thing, but I shouldn't be dying in a 1v1 at that level. All she's there for is battle. If you don't want a combat specialist that powerful, then give every thief the option to fight--just not as effectively. Because, I mean, seriously...how are you simply not able to fight? Also, where are stealth kills? These are sneaky thieves...right?3. Pacing, specifically with income, is not ideal. I understand that you need some tension when it comes to balancing income, but I'm having to steal everything in the level to barely afford my bills and I haven't even gotten through the second level (partly because of the income drain making it impossible to pay for 7 thieves).4. The difficulty of an area ratchets up immediately after a single heist; will there ever be a time where I leave a mission and the map doesn't flood with the maximum number of town guards? All I stole was a wooden spoon and some crappy gutrot.5. Music is annoying and loops often. Other random thuds occur at least while I'm in the tavern--I have no idea why.6. I'm 4 hours in and on the second zone, but all my thieves are already maxed out in level. That's not a good sign.7. Skills/attributes customization feels shallow. It wouldn't be so bad if each set of skills could be realized without leaning to heavily on one or two main skills, but really it boils down to stacking the stealth skill and making sure everyone is a lock picker or combat specialist. All in all, the game showed great promise, but I expected a bit more for 18 bucks. I'm willing to bet many others will get a lot more enjoyment out of this game than I did, but I just don't have much free time these days to spend on lesser polished games. For all I know this game has some badonkadonk on it after the second zone, but I simply can't push through any more.. I fear that afew people are too extreme with what they must expect from small development teams now days, Killers and Thieves started as a concept thats changed and evolved to become what it is now. At the moment there aren't that many decent squad/guild management games that work as well as KaT (Killers and Thieves). While repetitive and uniquely challenging I enjoyed the game more so because of my limited play time with work forcing sessions every few days.Oddly I related the game's heists to missions I've played in Doorkickers another squad game where each map / district has greater and lesser successes depending on how you appoarch the map with your limited squad. Particulary I found I need to have one spotter, one killer and one thief for most maps however mid game I needed multiple killers which meant that those characters who I gave skills earlier now weren't strong enough to cope. Which is probably meant grinding ... and grinding is part of the game aswell, as it can be more profitible early on taking a small two man team and opportunistically looting then an actual full team for a whole map "cleanout". Later on, I hope that the Devs add additional centralised management options so that shops can be accessed at the tavern rather then changing four or five screens to sell afew goods.Art style is much the same as Banner Saga as we'd expect however, I found that I didn't like the story thieves as losing one during a side mission meant waiting six or so days for another attempt which meant I stopped using them for anything other than needed. Eitherway I look forward to future updates as so should yourselves.6 / 10, with promise.. Sadly I must advise against buying this game. In my fifteen minutes with it, the game does look like it has a lot of depth to managing your guild and the heisting, but I feel like the game is just too fast. Your thieves bolt from place to place like the kings guard was on their tail, there isn't much of an option to survey a situation because of how the game is designed, and you don't have a lot of gameplay options besides "run into the building and hope there isn't a guard at the door."It could be a good game, just not a good stealth game.. Excellent game so far! Beautiful and inventive art. Only downside so far is I wish w,a,s,d keys would move the map. I find myself getting finger-tied at times. Otherwise great though.. 4/10The main heist part is pretty frustrating.. Game abandonned by the dev. Sadly.
