Logs: The Best Practices for Logging in Python



CloudWatch Logs enables you to centralize the logs from all of your systems, applications, and AWS services that you use, in a single, highly scalable service. You can then easily view them, search them for specific error codes or patterns, filter them based on specific fields, or archive them securely for future analysis. CloudWatch Logs enables you to see all of your logs, regardless of their source, as a single and consistent flow of events ordered by time, and you can query them and sort them based on other dimensions, group them by specific fields, create custom computations with a powerful query language, and visualize log data in dashboards.


Amazon Kinesis Data Streams is a web service you can use for rapid andcontinuous data intake and aggregation. The type of data used includes ITinfrastructure log data, application logs, social media, market data feeds, andweb clickstream data. Because the response time for the data intake andprocessing is in real time, processing is typically lightweight. The docker logs --timestamps command will add an RFC3339Nano timestamp, for example 2014-09-16T06:17:46.000000000Z, to eachlog entry. To ensure that the timestamps are aligned thenano-second part of the timestamp will be padded with zero when necessary.


The --since option shows only the container logs generated aftera given date. You can specify the date as an RFC 3339 date, a UNIXtimestamp, or a Go duration string (e.g. 1m30s, 3h). Besides RFC3339 dateformat you may also use RFC3339Nano, 2006-01-02T15:04:05,2006-01-02T15:04:05.999999999, 2006-01-02Z07:00, and 2006-01-02. The localtimezone on the client will be used if you do not provide either a Z or a+-00:00 timezone offset at the end of the timestamp. When providing Unixtimestamps enter seconds[.nanoseconds], where seconds is the number of secondsthat have elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC/GMT), not counting leapseconds (aka Unix epoch or Unix time), and the optional .nanoseconds field is afraction of a second no more than nine digits long. You can combine the--since option with either or both of the --follow or --tail options.


A log is a timestamped text record, either structured (recommended) orunstructured, with metadata. While logs are an independent data source, they mayalso be attached to spans. In OpenTelemetry, any data that is not part of adistributed trace or a metric is a log. For example, events are a specifictype of log. Logs are often used to determine the root cause of an issue andtypically contain information about who changed what as well as the result ofthe change.


The logs panel visualization shows log lines from data sources that support logs, such as Elastic, Influx, and Loki. Typically you would use this panel next to a graph panel to display the log output of a related process.


The logs panel shows the result of queries that were entered in the Query tab. The results of multiple queries are merged and sorted by time. You can scroll inside the panel if the data source returns more lines than can be displayed at any one time.


Each log row has an extendable area with its labels and detected fields, for more robust interaction. Each field or label has a stats icon to display ad-hoc statistics in relation to all displayed logs.


By default, Slack will only receive logs at the critical level and above; however, you can adjust this in your config/logging.php configuration file by modifying the level configuration option within your Slack log channel's configuration array.


You may write information to the logs using the Log facade. As previously mentioned, the logger provides the eight logging levels defined in the RFC 5424 specification: emergency, alert, critical, error, warning, notice, info and debug:


While developers try to prevent logging sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, credit card details, email addresses, and passwords, sometimes it gets logged. Until today, customers relied on manual investigation or third-party solutions to detect and mitigate sensitive information from being logged. If sensitive data is not redacted during ingestion, it will be visible in plain text in the logs and in any downstream system that consumed those logs.


Enforcing prevention across the organization is challenging, which is why quick detection and prevention of access to sensitive data in the logs is important from a security and compliance perspective. Starting today, you can enable Amazon CloudWatch Logs data protection to detect and mask sensitive log data as it is ingested into CloudWatch Logs or as it is in transit.


When sensitive information is logged, CloudWatch Logs data protection will automatically mask it per your configured policy. This is designed so that none of the downstream services that consume these logs can see the unmasked data. From the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or any third party, the sensitive information in the logs will appear masked.


Only users with elevated privileges in their IAM policy (add logs:Unmask action in the user policy) can view unmasked data in CloudWatch Logs Insights, logs stream search, or via FilterLogEvents and GetLogEvents APIs.

Note: There's a small lag between invoking the function and actually having the log event registered in CloudWatch. So it takes a few seconds for the logs to show up right after invoking the function.


In the Cloud Logging UI, use the advanced filter field to narrow the logscope to the function you want to analyze, then click Submit Filter tofilter the logs. For example, you could analyze only logs from a single function:


For text-based logs, such as those resulting from console.log() in yourfunctions, you can extract values and labels from the textPayload field usingregular expressions. For custom logs with structured data you can directlyaccess the data in the jsonPayload field.


Once you have created logs-based metrics to monitor your functions, you cancreate charts and alerts based on these metrics. For example, you could createa chart to visualize latency over time, or create an alert to let you knowif a certain error occurs too often.


On the Options page, enter or select the options you want, including a Description, time Range of log files to be included, and the optional types of logs to be included (Include Netstat Info, Include MSInfo, Include Postgres Data, Include Recent Crash Dumps), then click Generate Log File Snapshot.


You can send log files to Tableau Support as a part of a customer support case (a customer support case number is required). Before sending a log file, use tsm maintenance ziplogs command to combine the log files into a single zip file archive. Collect and automatically identify structure in machine-generated, unstructured log data (including application logs, network traces, configuration files, etc.) to build a high-performance index for scalable analytics.


Cloud Foundry aggregates logs for all instances of your apps as well as for requests made to your apps through internal components of Cloud Foundry. For example, when the Cloud Foundry Router forwards a request to an app, the Router records that event in the log stream for that app. Run the following command to access the log stream for an app in the terminal:


If a compatible log management service is not available in your Cloud Foundry marketplace, you can use user-provided service instances to stream app logs to a service of your choice. For more information, see the Stream App Logs to a Service section of the User-Provided Service Instances topic.


You may need to prepare your log management service to receive app logs from Cloud Foundry. For specific instructions for several popular services, see Service-Specific Instructions for Streaming App Logs. If you cannot find instructions for your service, follow the generic instructions below.
